Paving a new path: Dianne’s transition to disability support

Dianne Montgomery’s road to becoming a disability support worker was a little different to most. Here’s her story:

Di’s son struggled for many years with mental health issues. It was a long and arduous journey and once the worst was over and they could both finally see a future. Di decided that she wanted to help others in some way so explored opportunities in disability support and found a traineeship.

“I needed job security as I was a single parent paying a mortgage and helping support my daughter as well. This offered on the job training, 35 hours a week work fully paid. It was exactly what I needed.”

In August 2022, Di commenced her traineeship at Shepparton Community House, alongside pursuing her Certificate IV in Disability. Initially, however, it was not without its challenges.

“I am pretty modern technology challenged so having to learn how to use a computer and scan documents was hard. When my teacher opened the first book and spoke to me it was as though I’d been dropped off in another country and couldn’t understand the language!”

Fast forward twelve months, not only did she complete her traineeship, but she also found herself shortlisted for Victorian Trainee of the Year.

"Being nominated, let alone shortlisted, was something I never thought possible. I honestly thought there would be so many more deserving people out there."

The accolades didn’t stop there, Di went on to win People’s Choice Award at the Victorian Training Awards.

“Winning the People’s Choice Award has been the biggest achievement of my lifetime and to be there with my family to share my success made it the best night of my life. I felt like a movie star. Champagne on arrival, photos, interviews, and being supported by so many Victorians who only knew a snippet of my story. Words cannot describe the joy I felt that night.”

Di’s advice to those considering a career change:

“It’s never too late to change careers. I’m proof of that. Fully immerse yourself in your new environment and don’t let any negativity distract you from your goals. It’s the best decision I have made in my career.”

Congratulations Di, you go above and beyond all expectations to take care of your clients, and work as part of the team. We’re lucky to have you!
