Meet Detroit: Finding confidence and independence through Short Term Respite in Geelong.

There's a certain kind of person who doesn't need much to feel at ease - just the space to be themselves.

Detroit is a guitarist, a gym enthusiast, and a proud dad. He's also someone who knows exactly what he needs to thrive: the freedom to do things his own way, with support quietly available when he wants it.

Detroit has stayed at our Geelong home a couple of times for Short Term Respite, using it as a base to recharge, get back into his routines, and simply be himself. Between strumming his guitar and whipping up meals in the kitchen, he's found a rhythm here that genuinely makes him happy.

"I get to do whatever I want, and I get to be independent for myself - and that makes me really happy," he says.

What stands out most to Detroit isn't just the amenities or the location - it's the feeling. He describes the staff as people who make him feel welcome: always present, never hovering.

"No one's pushy or anything like that, but they're always there if I need any help with anything."

That balance - genuine support without intrusion - is something Detroit values deeply. For him, being able to cook his own meals, manage his own day, and ask for help on his own terms has been quietly transformative.

"It makes me feel really confident," he says. "I can do what I want, and that really makes me happy."

For us, that's everything.
