Paul's story reflects his experience in one of our Medium Term Accommodation homes. Our MTA options include a range of settings, and the accommodation and supports provided vary to suit each person's needs.
When Paul was ready to leave hospital, his long-term home wasn’t ready for him. Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) provided the bridge, giving him a safe, supportive place to recover while his long-term living arrangements were finalised.
For his wife, Janet, the change was almost immediate.
Paul spent several months in hospital following a significant change in his health. During that time, Janet worked closely with Paul's NDIS Support Coordinator to secure the right funding and supports for his next chapter - a process that required persistence, advocacy and determination.
While plans for Paul’s long-term home were being finalised, MTA gave him more than somewhere to stay. It gave him stability, routine and personalised support in a home environment.
When Janet first walked into Healthscope Independence Services' Bendigo home, it was the little things that stood out.
"What I saw was a blackboard on the wall with the week's menu written up. Staff were busy, engaged, doing things. There was life in the house."
For Janet, those small details spoke volumes. Here was a home where people were known, meals were shared, routines mattered and staff genuinely cared.
Paul moved into the home on a Tuesday under the NDIS's Medium Term Accommodation funding. By Friday, Janet knew they had found the right place.
"Within a couple of days, everything had changed for Paul - in a good way. I knew straight away it was the right one."
After months in hospital, Paul's spark had faded.
At the Bendigo home, something changed.
He joked with staff. He connected with the other residents and became part of everyday life in the house.
One of the moments that stands out most for Janet happened on her birthday.
Paul called her and sang Happy Birthday from beginning to end, without prompting.
"I was blown away. It meant the world to me."
At the heart of Paul's positive experience was the team at Bendigo, particularly Residential Manager Sam.
"Sam is so professional" Janet says. "She is right onto everything. Whether Paul needs to see a doctor, a dentist, anything - appointments are organised for him. Nothing falls through the cracks."
The personalised support Paul receives has made a tangible difference to his everyday life. He enjoys home-cooked meals, has a daily routine and is surrounded by people who genuinely enjoy his company.
"He cracks jokes with the staff and they think he's really funny. He's very happy.”
For Janet, the difference between hospital and home goes far beyond practical support.
"You need that human interaction. You need to have that connection. And having the right support workers and the right house manager is the key to it."
"I could not be happier. You've got a winning team there."
