A Story of Resilience on International Day of People with Disability: Meet Simone

Simone, our wonderful client supported by Healthscope Independence Servicers in her new SDA apartment in Geelong, is sharing her story on International Day of People with Disability.

"I'm Simone, and my life story is one of resilience. Despite developing septicaemia at just three month’s old and surviving 53 surgeries, I'm here 45 years later."

Simone's life has been marked by extraordinary challenges, including a difficult family background. "My family is unable to give me the support I need. My father and brother have challenging behaviours so I have chosen a different path due to my aversion to the behaviour.”

Simone faces a multitude of health issues, including epilepsy, asthma, arthritis, and cerebral palsy affecting her left side. But that hasn’t stopped her volunteering.  “I find fulfilment in 24 years of volunteering, with a focus on empowering people with disabilities and advocating for their rights.”

“Beyond my volunteer work, I actively participate in committees and support causes related to equality for women and disability awareness. As a Rotarian, my goal is to promote inclusivity and charity work. In my downtime, I enjoy spending time with friends and exploring the world by train.”

This year, Simone's commitment to making a difference has been recognised and is nominated for the City of Greater Geelong's Disability Awards.

On this International Day of People with Disability, we extend our appreciation to our exceptional clients, support workers, families, and allies. Together, they play a crucial role in cultivating communities that actively promote and celebrate vibrant and visible living for individuals of all abilities.
